Luberon & Haute-Provence

Haute Provence is one of the most beautiful regions in the South of France in terms of nature. Home to Europe's Grand Canyon - Les Gorges du Verdon, the Lac de Castillon, the Col de la Bonette, as well as countless hills and valleys. Whilst exploring this region you'll come across some of the most incredible lavender, sunflower and poppy fields you've ever seen, with snow-topped mountains in the background.

Surrounded by several other departments such as Alpes Maritimes, Var and Vaucluse, Haute Provence is full of small picturesque villages, all as beautiful as the next. The river Durance runs through this region, which makes for some gorgeous views and swimming opportunities. Famous for its fruit, cereals, honey, perfumes and essential oils, as well as black pudding and lavender honey, you'll be able to find everything that your heart desires. And don't forget, the film Les Miserables was also filmed here.

Things to See & Do in the Luberon and Haute-Provence

Cities & Villages

Gordes was voted one of the most beautiful villages in France and is known for its far-reaching views and beautiful surroundings.

Mazan is a great location for outdoor enthusiasts, with mountain biking, horse riding, fishing and tennis on the doorstep, plus great restaurants to refuel after a busy day outdoors.

Castellane is located deep within the rugged mass of the Haute Provence, making it the perfect spot from which to hike and explore the Gorge du Verdon.

Events and Festivals

Wine and music lovers should check out Gordes, which holds festivals filled with both during high season.

Outdoors & Activities for Families

The Gorge du Verdon is the longest and deepest canyon in Europe, indeed, France's own Grand Canyon. The road provides a helter-skelter trip along the narrow Gorge with towering cliffs on either side and the Verdon tumbling, sometimes far below, sometimes right beside you.

Eventually you will reach the viewpoint overlooking the stunningly blue Lac de Sainte-Croix. Descend to the lake and hire a pedalo or a rowboat. If the kids can keep their excitement under control long enough keep a look out for the rare and colourful bird life to be found on the lake.

Other bird life to be discovered in the area are the Griffon vultures reintroduced and now thriving in the region. You can't mistake these birds as their size alone makes them stand out; with a wingspan of nearly 3m you can easily spot them wheeling high in the sparkling blue sky.

There are many walks in this area along with canoeing, mountain biking, and canyoning.
