Castellar is one of the Riviera's famous perched villages dating back to the XV century and is situated right on the French/Italian border. There is 1 restaurant and 1 bar/tabac in the village. It is advisable to check opening times. Bread and pastries are available from the grocery store in Main Street.
There is an enclosed garden which provides a pleasant, tranquil place in which to relax and a boules court. There is also a church and an olive mill and a cheesemaker in the village.
The village has just 300 inhabitants in the village and a school for 68 children! It is ideal for people who enjoy painting and sketching and for nature lovers there are beautiful walks (Chemin GR 51) in the surrounding countryside.
Menton, 4 miles away, is a charming town with shops selling local produce, markets, several museums and an excellent choice of restaurants. A bus takes you to Menton for only 2 euros and there are good train links from Menton. The beaches at Menton are 6km from the village and there is a choice of public and private facilities. A wide variety of water sports are available and boat trips operate along the coast in summer months. Many of the world renowned Mediterranean gardens are in the vicinity and these include La Serre de la Madonne, the Exotic Garden in Monaco and the Hanbury Gardens just over the border in La Mortola. The delightful Italian coastal towns of Bordighera, San Remo and Imperia are well worth exploring and Dolceaqua, just north of Ventimiglia, is a very picturesque ancient town.
The hinterland is dotted with medieval villages and forts precariously perched atop mountain peaks. Back in France there is the glamour of Nice with its Promenade des Anglais, old city, galleries and flower market. In Monaco there are many museums, the Royal Palace and the extraordinary Observatory Caves. The Villa Ephrussi in Cap Ferrat and the Villa Kerylos in Beaulieu are fascinating tourist attractions.
