Cotignac

This lovely little village is located at the bottom of a tall limestone cliff. At one time, the inhabitants actually lived inside the cliff in troglodytic caves but at some point, they wisely decided that houses made a more attractive proposition than caves for a comfortable lifestyle.

Despite its size, there is always something going on in Cotignac – an artisanal market twice a week, a secondhand market every Sunday, open-air cinema and Theatre under the Stars. The sea beach at Fréjus is about an hour away but meanwhile, there are various sites around Cotignac where you can bathe in the river or sit under delightful plashy waterfalls.

The surrounding countryside is varied and beautiful. Consisting of hilltop hideways, olive groves, vineyards and wonderful woods, it is not surprising that there are so many resident artists.

The beautiful man made Lac de Ste Croix is only 28kms away. Pedalos and boats for hire, sailing and windsurfing too. Other water sports (canoeing, rafting and kayaking) can be found nearby, at the magnificent Gorges du Verdon.
