Grottoes in the Haut-Languedoc
The limestone mountains of the northern part of the Languedoc are riddled with springs and sources which over millions of years, have worn away great caves and galleries. There are several grottoes in the region open to the public, complete with stunning stalagmites and stalactites. Our favourite is the Grotte de Clamouse, near the lovely village of St Guilhem le Désert. There’s a boutique to visit after the guided tour. Try also La Grotte des Demoiselles near Saint Bauzille de Putois which takes you round the public galleries on a little funicular railway. The Grotte de Labeil at Lauroux is also recommended. Caverns may not be suitable for very small children or the infirm but older kids will love them. Take a jumper to wear as the change in temperature after a hot Mediterranean day is a bit of a shock to the system.
