The village of Poilhes is a wonderful place to spend a holiday, certainly if you're looking for an authentically French experience. The village is divided by the pleasantly meandering Canal du Midi and provides a great spot to watch the boats go past. The house is in the oldest part of the village, only seconds away from the Canal and two lovely restaurants.

On the other side of the Canal is a small store and there is a daily break truck that serves the village. A larger supermarket can be found a 5-minute drive away in Capestang, which also has a weekly market and a couple of fantastic restaurants - we recommend Le Vauban, which can be found opposite the Gendarmerie in the centre of the village.

The village also benefits from a municipal tennis court, only a couple of minutes' walk from the house.
The Mediterranean coast is 20-30 minutes drive, Montpellier, the thriving capital of the Languedoc with its international airport is 1 hour away by car.

Fifteen minutes east of Poilhes is Béziers - a historic town and a capital of wine-producing and rugby. Stroll through the famous Friday Flower Market, visit the Cathedral, have lunch in one of the many fantastic restaurants or shop in the maze of cobble-stoned streets. Béziers is especially vibrant in July and August thanks to the many events and town festivals (most of which centre wine!).

A half hour's drive south are the Roman ruins and the cathedral of Narbonne. Just outside Narbonne, one can visit the magnificently restored Cistercian monastery of Fontfroide, where an incident which sparked the first Albigensian Crusade was reputed to have happened.

If golf is your thing, there is a great course near Béziers called Golf St Thomas and more can be found further afield. If you're on the hunt for some nature, hiking is something not to be missed in this region, with countless trails in the entirety of the region - the most beautiful areas can be found at La Clape, the Haut-Languedoc and the Minerve area, or, you could spend the day kayaking in Roquebrun.

Customer Reviews

  • Alix’s house in Poilhes is fabulous! It is both incredibly hip and incredibly comfortable — and those two things aren’t always compatible! Our family of four adults loved every single minute we spent within its walls. And while we only had one week to enjoy its peace, quiet, and absolute artistic vibe, we could not have been happier.

Things to know: If you want to cook, this kitchen has every cooking implement you could ever need. If you want to listen to music, the DVD collection is completely comprehensive. If you forgot to bring a book, Alix has shelves full of fabulous tomes both long and short. If you want to paint, sketch or meditate, the secluded balcony is all you’ll need. If you want to do laundry, there’s a washing machine. If you want to recover from news overload, you’ll not miss the internet. And if you’re into ethnological arts, Alix’s house is adorned by exciting artifacts which will remind you daily that you’re in a uniquely special house.

Oh, yes, this is a rave review for Alix’s house. We will be back!

  • " The property description and photos were accurate and it is how I expected. Very cute and homely. Reasonable value for money for the time of year. We were happy with the cleanliness as well. The booking procedure and service from SFHV was personal and helpful. "

  • POIL101 - The photos were good and property even better in reality - which is the perfect way to do it! Our expectations were exceeded. Info provided beforehand and in the house was more comprehensive than anything I have experienced before. Booking procedure was excellent throughout. We’ll certainly check back with Juliana next time we can afford a holiday in France. Thanks

  • We very much enjoyed this holiday and would recommend Alix's House and the village of Poilhes to anyone looking for that type of vacation. That is, quiet, relaxed French rural life, off the main tourist trail (if you don't count the Canal du Midi as a tourist trail). Having said that, Poilhes is very well endowed with restaurants (3) for a place of its size. I guess we have the Canal du Midi to thank for that.  'J Remnant, Summer 2013'

  • There's no more information that would've been helpful - the owners are very generous with their knowledge of the area.
The property was good value for money.
The impression of the cleanliness of the property on my arrival was very clean.
The booking procedure and service were excellent, extremely helpful with swift response to our queries.
We loved this little cottage and the village location, away from it all. The cottage is decorated tastefully, it is clean, comfortable and well equipped.

South France Holiday Villas were great agents.

    "Hi Juliana,
What a wonderful holiday we just had.  The house was simply beautiful - so quaint, comfortable, well located and well equipped.  It felt like home from the very moment we stepped inside.   We totally fell in love with it.  Please send on our compliments to the owner and many thanks to you for suggesting it to us - it PERFECTLY fitted our requirements.  I just wish we could have stayed on for all of August!
Many thanks again.  We very much hope to be back in touch for next Summer.  Time to start filling the piggy-bank again."
