About Bélarga Maison de Maitre

A beautiful 'Maison de Maitre' located in the peaceful village of Belarga. The house was built in 1860 but has been completely refurbished in a pleasant, contemporary style of whites and pale greys. The house originally belonged to the Maffre family who were wealthy winegrowers and benefactors to the village. The local school and the College in Paulhan have both been named after this philanthropic family. The house could be very suited to two families holidaying together as the first and second floor accommodation are pretty much self-contained. Only the ground floor living area would be in common use. The route to Belarga is lined with majestic plane trees as it winds through vineyards. The village has all the basics (convenience shop, restaurant, bar, post office) close by and there is a beautiful river (suitable for swimming) with a 'beach' and picnic area a few minutes stroll from the house. The village also has a small playground for young children and a soccer pitch/basketball court and tennis court. All are just a few minutes' stroll from the house. There are 6 bedrooms in total : Bedrooms 1, 2 and 4 with double bed. Bedroom 3 with twin, double bed and single bed. Bedroom 5 with double bed and single bed. Bedroom 6 with two x single beds. 2 family bathrooms. On 1st floor a 10m2 bathroom with shower cubicle, freestanding bath, bidet, wash hand basin and wc. On the 2nd floor is an 8m2 bathroom with bath and shower attachment, wash hand basin and wc. Beautifully fitted open plan kitchen with breakfast bar and double doors leading onto the large, shaded terrace which is perfect for outdoor dining. Equipment includes cooker, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and microwave, coffee machine, toaster. Large double length reception room (31m) with original marble fireplace and double doors onto the terrace. On the other side of the hall (16m) there is a dining room (16m) open to the kitchen. Widescreen TV and DVD player with a selection of DVDs for all. There are two cots in the house. Bedlinen and bath towels provided. Folder including appliance instructions and other useful information is available. OUTSIDE From the kitchen, through double doors to spacious, tiled terrace that offers shade from afternoon heat by a splendid chestnut tree. Neighbouring houses are almost invisible and the area is very private. Outdoor dining table with 12 chairs and barbecue. Through gate in hedge to private heated pool which is 8m x 4.5m. The gate is 'adult-friendly' so small kids can't access the pool without your supervision. Daybed and sun loungers provided. You can sit in the sun or in the shade provided by the pool house. The grounds are 900m2 and are planted with lawn, climbing roses and old trees and enclosed by walls (no overlooking neighbours). The terrace (80m2) is a large private area with mature trees providing shade.

The market town of Pezenas is only 12km away and has regular clothes, food and antique markets as well as many fine restaurants. The beach at Meze is 20km away and other beaches such as Marseillan and Cap d'Agde are 30 mins drive.

The house is in a quiet country village, surrounded by vineyards, but close enough to the busy market town of Pezenas (10 min drive) for all shopping/restaurant needs. There are many small villages in the area, each with their own market day, so you can buy fresh fruit and veg, meat, cheeses etc... almost everyday.

There is a bus stop in the village with a service to Montpellier but it isn’t very often so we recommend having a car.

Unique benefits of the property
The village of Belarga is on the River Herault, which is perfect for swimming and fishing. There is a small weir or waterfall which the children love jumping off. There is also a small children's playground, tennis court and football/basketball pitch in the village. All of the above are just a 2 minute stroll from the house. The area has many fantastic restaurants nearby, all listed in the house book.

Coast/Beach
The beach at Mèze is 20km away and other beaches such as Marseillan and Cap d'Agde are 30 mins drive. There is a beautiful river (suitable for swimming) with 'beach' and picnic area a few minutes stroll from the house.

Special interest holidays
Belarga is situated in the centre of the Languedoc Roussillon wine region. There are many vineyards nearby offering wine tastings.

GUEST REVIEW

Gorgeous house in a stunning location.
5 of 5

We booked to stay for 2 weeks from 13/08/16 to 27/08/16, the group included 3 families a total of 13 people with ages ranging from 40 to 4.

The house was very spacious with plenty of room so we never felt like we were living on top of one another. The court yard has to be seen as I don't think the photo does it justice, it's lovely and is another room to the property. We ate all our meals here and it was a nice family space.

The pool was great and a really nice size and depth. Just up the road is the river and we had a great few days here. The house comes with an ice box and ice blocks for you to take a picnic.

The house is set in a small village surrounded by vineyards and the area is very picturesque.

We had a great time and would happily recommend this house to anyone.

A really homely, lovely old house in a nice location. Some high points: The trees shelter the house from the hottest weather, rooms are spacious and each has fans (so manage heat well), the pool is a lovely addition, parking for two or three vehicles and a fully-featured kitchen. A nice HiFi (with CDs which suited our tastes...). Very simply and comfortably furnished, which meant we felt very at ease. We had a small plumbing issue which got fixed really quickly. Local tennis courts and a brook for swimming in within 5 minutes walk. Peter the owner passed on some activity and food recommends that really suited us. All this in the stunning Languedoc region... whats not to like?

  • Really lovely property with loads of space. Beautiful courtyard with long table shaded by mature trees leading to a secluded heated pool with sun loungers and shaded areas to relax.
The village is very small but has a free tennis court which we loved, shop that serves beer and coffee and has fresh croissant and bread daily 2 min walk away, also has a boules club who welcomed us when we joined in.
You can walk to the river and swim or watch the kingfishers.
We had lots of recommendations about restaurants and markets from the host who was really helpful.
Kitchen is well equipped and there’s books, games, rackets , boules, inflatables etc to borrow. Had a really lovely holiday.

  • The house is beautiful, spacious and homely with great indoor and outdoor spaces. We were able to host various meetings of groups of friends and family comfortably. However, in the first week of August it got very hot (and in particular in the attic rooms) which made it difficult to sleep, even with the fans. Once the temperature dropped it was more comfortable.
The house is well located with easy travel south to the beaches (Meze, Marseillan Plage and Vias Plage) and north to Lac du Salagou and St Guillaume le Desert. We loved swimming in both the pool and the local river and used the village tennis court on multiple occasions. The house is, however, on a main road with through traffic and farm vehicles.
We highly recommend using the épicerie for daily bread and pastries and the Thursday night pizza van.
All in all we had a wonderful stay and would recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic French village holiday experience.

  • A fantastic base for exploring lots of nearby towns, lakes.rivers and seaside so many beautiful places within a very short drive - the house was superb lovely bedrooms (spacious) with a big kitchen/diner.
The outdoor space was very private with lovely outdoor dining area complete with large trees providing well needed shade, the pool area was an absolute joy for the whole family also with it being secured from the dining area for the little ones was a bonus.
