Location and Map

This marker is for indication purpose only

Le Bastide is located at a cross-road in the centre of the little village of Canaules which is literally surrounded by the vines & vineyards of the wonderful Languedoc wine producing region of southern France.

If you feel like seeing the vines close-up or learning a bit more about how wine is produced & blended then there are numerous local vineyards nearby. Almost all of them welcome visitors and there are some very good ones where English is spoken . If you feel like a bit of exercise there are bicycles available for all the family at La Bastide for you to cycle to the vineyards or nearby villages or just to explore the surrounding area at your leisure. Road traffic tends to be a lot lighter here than in many other areas of mainland Europe so generally speaking ( once you take all normal precautions ) cycling is a safe activity for guests of all ages .

If cycling around the French countryside seems a bit too energetic for you then maybe you’d like to stretch out & read a book in the sun beside the swimming pool or on the large paved seating area at the front of the apartments . If you are not a sun lover then there is always the shelter of our poolbar where you can surf the net with our free wi-fi.

With an average 300 days of sunshine each year you will be literally spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor activities . Activities available nearby include Golf, Horse Riding , Fishing , Water Sports , Climbing & Hill-walking . The Cévennes National Park with it’s wonderful flora & fauna is well worth a visit also .

Some of the larger towns in the area include Anduze (11.5 km) which is known as the gateway to the Cévennes . From here you can board the old steam train which takes you through the Cévennes to St. Jean du Garde stopping along the way to visit the famous Bambouseraie which is home to Europe’s largest bamboo collection . Anduze is a lively tourist town with many good restaurants , shops & cafe’s . Nearby Sauve is a medieval town (12km) which has managed to retain all of it’s old charm . There are a number of good restaurants hidden among the narrow streets as well as 2 bars in the small town square . Celebrity residents in Sauve include the characaturist Robert Crumb & also the famous Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts . Ales is the closest city . It’s about a 20 minute drive from La Bastide des Lavandieres & it has all of the usual large shops & department stores you’d expect to find in a city of it’s size as well as an open air market each Monday.

Other interesting cities worth visiting if time allows are Nimes with it’s famous Roman Amphitheatre & Montpellier which is a bright vibrant modern city which still has some wonderful old architecture & buildings . Once in Montpellier the beaches of the Mediterran are just a short distance away. Uzès is famous throughout France for it’s huge Saturday market when the whole place literally becomes one big open air market . Another city of interest to artists & art historians is Arles – the home for a time of Van Gogh . Arles also has some well preserved Roman ruins which are worth a visit too . Avignon with it’s Papal Palace was during the period from 1309 to 1377 the residence of 7 different popes – all French. As well as the Papal Palace Avignon is also famous for it’s bridge – the Pont d’Avignon .

With so much to do your only problem will be how do you fit it all in ?

Guest reviews:

The apartment was very spacious, clean and accessible. The house is set in a beautiful part of the countryside surrounded by vines and sunflowers and near to most attractions. The caretakers at La Bastide were very hospitable and friendly and made us welcome from the moment we arrived to the minute we left. Nothing was too much trouble. In all we had a relaxing time and will be back. We would recommend La Bastide des Lavandiéres to family and friends in fact we already have.

Our apartment was a great size and in great condition. Having two small children is was great to have the play area right outside the door. The play area was well set out and secure so we could relax when the children were outside playing. Pool was also great and was always kept clean and tidy. Location of the apartments is great in that there is plenty to see and do in the neighbourhood but you do need transport. So overall a great location and apartments. Quiet, relaxing and great for families with children.

Overall we were delighted with 'La Bastide'. We had absolutely everything we needed in our accommodation - We were very impressed with all the baby equipment (and all brand new!), even down to spare dummies. Our little boy loved all the toys which were provided outside. The caretakers were very friendly and welcoming. If there was anything we needed then they were happy to help. We were happy to take advantage of the free wi-fi . It was really good that we could get information on the region and what was on nearby each day . Overall we had a lovely holiday

A lovely old house simply and well renovated with facilities for children such as the playground and fenced off swimming pool that made it a very easy place to relax in with kids. We had everything we needed. It was great having the small bar there for drinks and ice creams and very good value too. There was also plenty to do and see in the area without much of a drive. The caretakers could not have been more helpful. They answered all our queries and provided anything extra we needed. We were very impressed. Will be recommending it to friends.

La Bastide des Lavandieres is the perfect location for a family holiday - beautiful apartments, spacious outdoor facilities with great pool and play area. A Lovely building, tastefully renovated and extremely well appointed apartments. Very adaptable so ideal for a large family holiday like ours - 8 adults, 3 small boys. Lovely outdoor space and wonderful pool area. Excellent play area for the boys and loads of toys etc. Pool bar really well done out by Jenny & Gerry provided a very welcome bit of shade by day and lots of fun in the evening ! A wonderful spot to relax and unwind .
We cannot speak highly enough of Jenny and Gerry. They were always friendly, very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. They were informative and always on hand. Gerry took us to the local vineyard - where we understand you have some vines - and his fluent french was invaluable. They were particularly good with our granchildren frequently coming back with more bits and pieces to keep them entertained and Gerry even took time out to teach 4 year old George to play chess! The collection of hats in the pool bar provided plenty of laughs in the evening and we mustn't forget Teddy their dog - a great hit with the Boys .  You provide the perfect location for a great holiday no matter how large or small the group. Thank you for a lovely family holiday. We shall be happy to recommend La Bastide des Lavandieres to anyone.

We had a fantastic holiday in La Bastide. What you see on the website is what you get. Apartment 3 was excellent for 2 couples. Balcony was a great size. Nice and shady in the morning and again later in the evening. Views from balcony were lovely. (Still don't know what that big building on the top of the hill was.) Despite the weather being very hot the apartment was ok & never got too hot because of the thick walls (although the fan helped).
La Bastide itself is a beautiful building. The pool was fine and a reasonable size for the apartments. Beds and pillows were comfortable. Lots of places to see roundabout but a car is essential. The caretakers are extremely helpful and friendly. From the minute we arrived they gave us a warm, friendly welcome. They also provided info before arrival and offered to get shopping, prepare a meal etc. They couldn't have been more helpful. Nothing was too much bother. Any little problems we had they did their best to sort or provided an alternative solution. We would be more than happy to holiday here again. 10/10 for our holiday.

Great location - quiet, rural setting, within easy reach of many interesting historical towns/sites. Good climate. Apartment was spacious, well equipped and the pool was excellent for children (lots of inflatibles) and for relaxing. Provision of towels to rent at the pool was a really helpful touch. The large balcony in the apartment and the hammock were great.  The pool area and all areas around the entire  complex were kept clean and very tidy. Young children were well catered for (sand, paddling pool, play area).
