If you feel like seeing the vines close-up or learning a bit more about how wine is produced & blended then there are numerous local vineyards nearby. Almost all of them welcome visitors and there are some very good ones where English is spoken . If you feel like a bit of exercise there are bicycles available for all the family at La Bastide for you to cycle to the vineyards or nearby villages or just to explore the surrounding area at your leisure. Road traffic tends to be a lot lighter here than in many other areas of mainland Europe so generally speaking ( once you take all normal precautions ) cycling is a safe activity for guests of all ages .
If cycling around the French countryside seems a bit too energetic for you then maybe you’d like to stretch out & read a book in the sun beside the swimming pool or on the large paved seating area at the front of the apartments . If you are not a sun lover then there is always the shelter of our poolbar where you can surf the net with our free wi-fi.
With an average 300 days of sunshine each year you will be literally spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor activities . Activities available nearby include Golf, Horse Riding , Fishing , Water Sports , Climbing & Hill-walking . The Cévennes National Park with it’s wonderful flora & fauna is well worth a visit also .
Some of the larger towns in the area include Anduze (11.5 km) which is known as the gateway to the Cévennes . From here you can board the old steam train which takes you through the Cévennes to St. Jean du Garde stopping along the way to visit the famous Bambouseraie which is home to Europe’s largest bamboo collection . Anduze is a lively tourist town with many good restaurants , shops & cafe’s . Nearby Sauve is a medieval town (12km) which has managed to retain all of it’s old charm . There are a number of good restaurants hidden among the narrow streets as well as 2 bars in the small town square . Celebrity residents in Sauve include the characaturist Robert Crumb & also the famous Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts . Ales is the closest city . It’s about a 20 minute drive from La Bastide des Lavandieres & it has all of the usual large shops & department stores you’d expect to find in a city of it’s size as well as an open air market each Monday .
Other interesting cities worth visiting if time allows are Nimes with it’s famous Roman Amphitheatre & Montpellier which is a bright vibrant modern city which still has some wonderful old architecture & buildings . Once in Montpellier the beaches of the Mediterran are just a short distance away. Uzès is famous throughout France for it’s huge Saturday market when the whole place literally becomes one big open air market . Another city of interest to artists & art historians is Arles – the home for a time of Van Gogh . Arles also has some well preserved Roman ruins which are worth a visit too . Avignon with it’s Papal Palace was during the period from 1309 to 1377 the residence of 7 different popes – all French. As well as the Papal Palace Avignon is also famous for it’s bridge – the Pont d’Avignon .
With so much to do your only problem will be how do you fit it all in ?

We absolutely loved our stay at La Bastide. The apartment was nice and clean, simply decorated and safe for our very curious 15-month old. We thought that La Bastide is a stunning building with gorgeous well-kept gardens. There were plenty of toys for our little one to play with and we loved to be able to go out on the bike with her on the back too. The swimming pool is a good size and is kept very clean. It was also really useful for us to have the little bar by the swimming pool as our daughter would always have a fair amount of shade to play in. The local area is stunning and there are plenty of things to do; you just wouldn't get bored.
The caretakers are very kind and extremely thoughtful. Thank you very much to both of them for making our time at La Bastide so very special! They're absolutely brilliant! . They show that they genuinely care that you have a good time and are incredibly thoughtful but at the same time respect your privacy. For example, they had noticed that our daughter was a bit scared of being in the pool, even with the inflatable ring on, so the next day they had bought a little blow-up boat for her so that she could be in the pool anyway. We thought this was so kind! we felt very comfortable using their babysitting services and we had a lovely well-deserved night out.
They also served us an incredible breakfast on our first morning there and we felt so spoiled. Basically, if you had any questions you could just ask but they also actively made sure to look after you and kept the place clean and tidy. The Bastide is a fantastic place in a beautiful location. We would definitely consider coming back.

The week we spent at La Bastide was one of the best of our 6 week trip through France. We wished we could have spent longer. The apartment was very modern and had everything you needed. The pool was an added bonus that we enjoyed every day. The pool house was great and we enjoyed many a beverage there with other guests and the caretakers. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this accommodation . It was everything we could have hoped for . I only wish we didn't live so far away in Australia so we could come back sooner.
The caretakers were fantastic. They greeted us on arrival and were so friendly and helpful. The kids loved their little dog Ted and played with him heaps. We enjoyed spending time with them and had drinks by the pool, dinner at a lovely restaurant nearby and also wine tasting at the owner's vineyards. They also accompanied us to the doctors when my little boy got sick and translated for us and then helped with the medicine dosage too. This went above and beyond and demonstrates what caring people they are. They are brilliant! Our kids had a ball in the pool and we enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere. I wish we could come back sooner!

This was our second stay ( we were here last August also ) We really liked our apartment,it was spacious and well laid out, and suited us well with 3 young children. It was great to have the highchair, cot and plastic bowls and bottle. I would suggest advertising the younger baby equipment (steriliser, dummies, etc) before people come so that they know they don't need to bring these bits. It is quite a good selling point!
We had a fantastic two weeks at La Bastide, one of our best family holidays. The children loved the pool and play areas and made loads of friends, meaning we had a relaxed adult time! There is so much to do in the surrounding areas, we loved the river swimming, again perfect for the kids. We hope to return when they are a little older to try out the kayaking and mountain biking!

Great location, very good combination of playground, swimming pool and terrace . Also the apartment is close to village playground (our friends had apartment 2). Lot's of space very comfortable. Terrace is big and private. The swimming pool was cleaned every day & the area around it was also very clean, great! Great formula for a holiday with small children. There is a playground, toys, swimming pool... what else do kids need ??. Many beautiful places to visit in the area, good location for daytrips. Very quiet, great place to relax and enjoy good wine.
Katalin Baranyi & Family from Amsterdam , Netherlands ( guests in Apartment 1 - July 2011 )
The apartment was clean and bright and even better (if possible) than the website pictures. Everything that you need for a holiday was there. Views from the balcony were stunning . Lovely accommodation and pool. Lots of pretty villages close by. There is something for everyone in the area but also fantastic for just relaxing . The caretakers looked after the bastide diligently from early morning till late and were always available to put right any little problems or to give information about the surrounding area. Very friendly and efficient. It was brilliant to have such good onsite support.
