Location and Map

We are so glad you are spending a holiday in Pont Royal under the gorgeous Provencal
sky. There is a comprehensive visitors manual in the house but we just wanted to let you know a few of our favourite places in advance in case you want to make plans – and it’s always exciting to look at different places before you actually get there.

Restaurants, bars, shops within the Domaine – approx. 15 minutes walk from house.
Numerous shops, restaurants in neighbouring villages – car recommended.

The house is situated on Golf Course. Tennis and other sports (crazy golf, pedalos, kids clubs etc) available by booking at main reception in the Domaine.
Eating ..........
We have a family tradition that Friday is Market Chicken day! Head down to the market in Mallemort, pick up a spit-roasted chicken or two from the “Chicken Man” – we always go to the one by the fish stall with his back to the road – and make sure you ask for plenty of pommes de terres which are cooked underneath the spit in the chicken juices. Add a green salad and that’s lunch or dinner sorted for the day.

Le Jardin, Mallemort (0033 (0)4 90 42 82 37)
Very pretty restaurant which opened its doors in our local village of Mallemort three years ago - the garden is a haven of peace and tranquillity. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 0900-1800 and on Friday and Saturday evenings (these times are subject to change!). Daily specials, salads, ice cream, delicious home-made pastries and a large selection of tea. Murielle, the owner and chef, will also cook a delicious meal for you to collect and serve at home – as she says “feel free to tell (or not to tell) who prepared it”! Murielle also speaks very good English! Le Jardin is opposite the main square just along the road from the Tourist Office.

Auberge du Vieux Village, Mallemort (0033 (0)4 90 57 49 66)
We have been to the Auberge in Mallemort numerous times over the past ten years since we have been holidaying in Pont Royal and have always had a fabulous time. Not for vegetarians, this is a restaurant for people who enjoy their meat. The chef will even bring your chosen cut to the table before cooking for your approval! In the summer time you can sit on the shady terrace but we also love it in the colder months when the open fire is blazing and the pretty interior makes for a cosy atmosphere. Make sure you book in advance – we have never been there when it hasn’t been packed.

Le Petit Café, Oppede le Vieux (0033 (0)4 90 76 74 01)
I had read loads of reviews of this little café and was very disappointed when we arrived the first time to find it fully booked – no wonder – we returned for a Sunday lunch making sure to pre-book - and had a truly memorable meal in this lovely place. They offer set menus, on that occasion we went for the one priced at 19 Euros simply because it had everything we wanted – the food was gorgeous – a wonderful asparagus soup, fabulous lamb stacked with tiny pastry discs and aubergine, served with cannellini beans in a gorgeous sauce and to finish the most divine chocolate fondant cake I have ever tasted! We have been back a few times – most recently in April of this year, again for Sunday lunch, we had local white asparagus with hollandaise sauce, stuffed rabbit and local strawberries. The setting is wonderful and the staff very friendly.

L’Archeveche, Place de Martyrs-de-la-Resistance, Aix en Provence
(0033 (0)4 42 21 43 57)
I love Aix. The shops – the beautiful Cours Mirabeau (fabulous for people watching!), the market … whenever we go I love to lunch at L’Archeveche, tucked away in the back streets in a square close to the Cathedrale Saint-Sauveur – reasonably priced – salads, pasta, daily specials – and a great place to relax after all that shopping.

Le Repaire, Vernegues (0033 (0)4 90 59 31 64)
In the hills overlooking Pont Royal is this lovely Creperie – a great favourite with our children. Lovely setting on a pretty terrace strung with fairy lights and alongside ruins left by an earthquake (great walk through the ruins to a viewpoint where you can look down on Mallemort and Pont Royal) – home-made cider, savoury and sweet crepes, salads and wonderful ice-cream – it’s simple but memorable and the fact that you have to book in advance proves what a popular spot it is.

Pizza Nonni, Lourmarin (0033 (0)4 90 68 23 33)
This is a huge favourite of our neighbours, Richard, Michelle, Jake and Finn, who own Mas 9 (opposite our house) – they introduced us to it and now it is one of our favourite places too. Just great food in a lovely place at the top of a street in Lourmarin looking down at the art shops and the old village.

L’Art Glacier, Ansouis (0033 (0)4 90 77 75 72)
Quite simply the best ice cream we have ever tasted! You choose from a large book with illustrations of all the dishes – each one a work of art. Pretty setting too – high above the patchwork fields of Provence.
Café du Commerce, Alleins (0033 (0)4 90 59 37 17)
We have a tradition of popping into this little café for a cold beer before we arrive in Pont Royal – to toast the start of another stay in our favourite place. But as well as a lovely place for a drink in a traditional Provencal village bar they also serve wonderful pizzas – so if you arrive late in the day and miss the supermarket, you won’t go hungry!

There are also a lot of fine dining restaurants in the region – the following have been recommended to us and Karen will of course be able to recommend her favourites too.

L’Auberge de Cheval Blanc, Cheval Blanc (0033 (0)4 32 50 18 55
Sous les Micocouliers, Eygalieres (0033 (0)4 90 95 94 53)
Chez Bru, Eygalieres (0033 (0)4 90 90 60 94
La Rouette, Rians (0033 (0)4 94 80 32 58)
La Feniere, Lourmarin (0033 (0)4 90 68 11 79

Drinking .........

You will probably find your own favourite but the following vineyards are close to Pont Royal and we always make a trip to buy a few bottles!

Chateau Bas
Chateau de Beaupre

Both will let you taste before you buy of course! Roy Rene on the main road from Pont Royal to Aix also sells some lovely wine at great prices. Again Karen will be able to share her favourites with you if you want some more ideas.

Beautiful villages and towns ..........

We are obviously biased but we really do think that you are visiting the most beautiful region of France. Too many places to mention but some of our favourites are:

Lacoste – a lot of the village is now owned by the designer Pierre Cardin who is renovating the chateau at the top but the Marquis of Sade also once lived here! Quite a climb to the top through the winding, cobbled streets but the view makes it worth while. Reward yourselves with a cold drink at the Café de France with a spectacular view over the valley.

St. Remy de Provence – the first time we went to St. Remy we drove around the one way system and wondered what all the fuss was about! The next time we parked the car and walked into the old town and fell in love!! Gorgeous little shops (the pictures in the back twin bedroom come from the specialised stationery shop there), great cafes and a lovely place to wander around. Don’t leave without visiting the famous Chocolatier, Joel Durand, on the Bvd Victor Hugo and choose a little box to be filled with your favourite flavours and the wonderful Petit Duc, also on the Bvd Victor Hugo where you can buy the most beautiful sweet and savoury biscuits and sweets.

Monastère St. Paul-de-Mausole, St. Remy de Provence – this is the hospital where Van Gogh came in 1889 and where he painted some of his most famous paintings. For around 5 Euros you can visit his room and stand in many of the locations where he got his inspiration from, it is a beautiful setting and makes a memorable visit.

Oppede le Vieux – after maybe having lunch or a drink in Le Petit Café – climb up to the old church and the ruins of the old castle and look down at the new village below.

The Luberon – to be honest we love it all and when we have friends to stay for the first time it’s really hard to decide where to take them! Quite often we do a mini tour starting at the market in Lourmarin on Friday morning and then driving through Bonnieux and on to Lacoste. Then again, why not visit Gordes – busy in high season but it has still retained it’s old world charm and the drive to it is breathtaking. Fontaine de Vacluse is also a favourite – we went for the first time one summer with our boys on a really hot day and it was lovely to walk along in the shade by the River Sorgue to where the source of the spring that feeds the river gushes from deep in a cave in the mountainside.

Avignon – the famous bridge and the Pope’s Palace! Living statues will fascinate all ages in the large square outside the palace and there is a little train that takes you on a tour of the town. My girls love the shops here and the little ones will love the “double decker” carousel. If you visit during the Arts Festival (6th-26th July this year) don’t be surprised to see strangely dressed actors, comedians and singers walking through the streets all trying to tempt you to attend their show!

Aix en Provence – they say that if you sit in a street café anywhere in France other than Paris then it should be in Aix. The markets are fabulous, the shops are plentiful and varied and there are numerous places to stop for a drink or a bite to eat.

Cassis – our favourite seaside destination although it can get busy in high season – really pretty harbour village and you can take a boat trip to see the famous Calanques – a series of deep narrow inlets – the fjords of Provence!

I could go on but hopefully this will whet your appetite and please let us know if you find your own particular favourite. Of course you may decide to just chill in the garden or by one of the pools but whatever you do please make sure you write in our white visitors book and let us know how you get on.

Villa in Pont Royal, Mallemort, Bouches du Rhone.

The villa within the domaine of Pont Royal, was completed in January 2008 - tucked away at the far end of the Domaine, peaceful and quiet yet walking distance from the village square.

The closest village is Mallemort with shops, banks, bars and restaurants. Large Intermarche supermarket - about 10 minutes by car. Within the domaine of Pont Royal you will find a small selection of shops, post office and tourist information. Local activities include zip wiring, hiking, cycling, canoeing, golf, horse riding, fishing, tennis.

This wild, peaceful golf course reflects Provence and its architect, the late great Seve Ballesteros. A very fine test of golf where his trademarks of huge bunkers, well-placed trees and water hazards fit in beautifully with the natural ravines and undulations. Whatever the level (green card required) golfers will enjoy measuring themselves against the tactical challenges of a stimulating course. 18 holes - par 72 - considered to be among the finest in France. The Masters 13 Tournament is played in Pont Royal every October. A new six hole course with driving range and club house opened in April 2010 and is situated directly by Le Hameau des 3 Collines.

Closest beach are in the Carmargue or at Cassis - an ancient fishing port where the little fishing boats now share the harbour with yachts and a collection of tourist boats for visiting the calanques. Nice and St. Tropez 2 hours drive away.
Closest beach approx. 45 minutes drive

By car: A7 motorway - exit at Senas then 8km on the N7 towards Aix-en-Provence. By plane: Marseille Provence International Airport - 50km / 40 mins drive. Nimes Airport 60km / 50 mins drive. Nice Airport approx 215km / 2 hours drive. By train: TGV stations at Avignon and Aix-en-Provence. Car hire recommended.

The domaine of Pont Royal and it's closest village, Mallemort, is located north of Marseille, between the historic cities of Aix-en-Provence and Avignon. Situated in the heart of Provence in the Bouches-du-Rhone in the South East of France, where the river flows into the Mediterranean - in this land between sea and mountains, the climate is wonderful for a visit at any time of the year.

owner profile

We're Frank and Debby and we currently live and work in Belfast, Northern Ireland. We have four children aged between 19 and 26 who are pursuing their own careers and spreading their wings. Although Northern Ireland is a beautiful country, the climate can be predictably awful and we found ourselves craving the sunshine and outdoor way of life. We had been lucky enough to rent a beautiful villa in Pont Royal from friends and after spending a number of summer and weekend breaks there we discovered that a new development was being built. We took the plunge and signed up in September 2006 when all we had to go on was a building site and plans. The house was finished in 2008 and we are all delighted with the end result - it is proving to be a wonderful bolt hole where we can escape and spend quality time as a family exploring the countryside and enjoying the fantastic food and wine that this region offers.

As a family we love Pont Royal because it is secure and safe for all ages. When our children were growing up they loved the independence of being able to walk to the village and take part in the numerous activities - making friends that they are still in contact with to this day. Our little corner of the Domaine is quiet and peaceful but an easy stroll from the shops, restaurants, bars and golf club of Pont Royal. As the plants around the house have matured our little garden has become a private haven of sunshine and beautiful views - we are also lucky to have access to two pools which are accessed only by guests and residents of our Hamlet.

The golf course of Pont Royal, designed by the late Seve Ballesteros, is a huge draw for golfers and with the new 6-hole course and driving range just below our house there is plenty for all abilities. For non-golfers the course provides a beautiful backdrop for the Domaine.

Our house is perfectly situated for those wishing to explore this beautiful region; the Luberon with its pretty perched villages, the fabulous cities of Avignon and Aix en Provence and numerous World Heritage Sites - the Roman Amphitheatre in Arles, the Papal Palace and the famous bridge in Avignon, the Pont du Gard and the Roman theatre in Orange.

We discover new places with each visit and love being able to share our house with our guests. We are delighted with the feedback we receive from them.

Customer Reviews

"What an amazing time we had at Pont Royal in this villa. A real home away from home. The villa is well equipped with everything you can imagine and with a book and dvd collection to rival Amazon! If you like exploring like we do, the villa is perfectly located for many days out in the surrounding area from the beaches to the Luberon. The owners of the villa have an extensive list of suggested outings and restaurants that they recommend and we worked our way through them and loved them all! Pont Royal itself is fantastic and there is so much to do in the actual resort for the children and for the grown ups. A choice of pools within the resort with the amazing wave pool and super slides at the main resort which our children loved. Then there are activities galore from mini golf, to paintball to horse riding and of course for golf lovers an amazing 18 hole course and a mini course for children / beginners. Lovely bars for drinks on the terrace and a good Italian restaurant. We would highly recommend a holiday in this villa and at Pont Royal. "
"On the 3rd June 2012 we escaped the rain in the UK and returned to the idyllic surroundings of Pont Royale in Provence.
It was so relaxing to be amongst the beautiful countryside and feel the warmth of the sun. We immediately felt at home entering the bright, clean and airy villa. Being somewhat ‘picky’ in my choice of accommodation, it was lovely to see the villa maintains its high standards of cleanliness and amenities. It is so tastefully decorated with a real feel of ‘Provence’.
There have been additions to the extremely helpful location guide giving great inspiration for places to visit. On such recommendation we took our two children aged 12 and 10 yrs to St Remy to the Van Gogh museum which we all loved. Its quiet serenity really helped us picture Van Gogh at work and understand a little more of him as a man. DVDs of ‘Dr Who’ at the villa with the episode on Van Gogh was a must before we visited and the children came away really inspired!
Our children are older now and so didn’t need the fantastic collection of good condition- mostly new-children’s toys provided at the villa, but there was still plenty for them to do- they loved the new play area in the village and we spent a day at the pools and waterslides- great fun! The local pools specifically for the villa remain well maintained and we had them mostly to ourselves!
We enjoyed eating in, enjoying watching the sun go down- and the moon rise over the mountains whilst eating on the terrace. The local market at the Pont Royal village and neighbouring surpermarches and village shops provided excellent local produce and the array of cookery books at the villa inspired us to try and eat ‘French’!
Thank you for such a lovely week- just what we needed – with all you provide to make the stay so comfortable, we felt so relaxed and didn’t want to leave! We will return soon ! "

"Wow - top house, top location, top pool - you don't need anything more".
"What a fabulous house - felt right at home as soon as we arrived! Beautiful location and views and the house offering all the comforts of home".
"The property is exactly as described on the website but what does not come across is that this is clearly a much loved family home and it was lovely to be able to share this."
"We had a great time - it really is a lovely house and the place was so quiet ... my son adored the Duplo ... his best friend from school was staying elsewhere on the Domaine so they came round a few times and all the children from age 9 to 4 were well amused! Thanks again for all your efforts, we really realised how well you look after your guests when our friends moaned that they had no information in their house at all. Well done! It really helped."
