This is an area of Provence without the notoriety of St Rémy-de-Provence or the northern Luberon, whose villages of Menerbes, Gordes, Bonnieux, and others became known worldwide through Peter Mayle’s witty novels.

Nevertheless, the southern Luberon is a very attractive area for travellers, loaded with everything visitors love: excellent restaurants, many Provençal markets, stunning scenery, lavender fields, beautiful villages, wineries, historical sites but with generally fewer crowds, a blessing in summer.

Located within the Luberon National Park, not far from the Durance River, Pertuis is just a short distance from Aix-en-Provence. Narrow streets, vaulted arches and many fountains - surrounded by rolling hills and orchards and vineyards as far as the eye can see.

Pertuis is a large, pleasant town on the rich plain of the Durance, at the southern edge of the Vaucluse. Called the "Porte du Luberon" due to its location at the southern limit of the Luberon, it's also known as the capital of the Pays d'Aigues. Peypin d'Aigues is a very small Provençal village but it does have a boulangerie and a bar/restaurant. A little further afield (4 km) you find the picturesque hilltop village of Grambois which has a cafe/bar, a Michelin starred restaurant and a small mini-market where you can buy day-to-day provisions for your Provençal holiday. For larger shops and eating out you will find Tour d'Aigues 8 kilometres down the road. Pertuis (13kms) is the major commercial centre in the area which boasts two large supermarkets as well as a selection of bars and restaurants.

The town of Pertuis retains several examples of its medieval past with a 13th-century clocktower, 14th-century battlements, the ruins of an old castle and a remarkable old church, rebuilt during the 16th century and housing some superb examples of marble religions statues. The modern Pertuis offers cafes and bars, bakeries and restaurants, a large supermarket and of course, being in Provence, lots of vineyards and wineries. Cadenet is 12kms away and with lots of delightful small shops to explore. The village of Curcuron is 13kms away and, apart from other delights, you'll find the renowned restaurant "La Petite Maison"; make sure you reserve well in advance. The stunning village of Lourmarin is 16kms down the road and is an absolute must to visit. Aix-en-Provence is just 24kms away and offers the buzz of the big city,

Customer Reviews

  • We stayed in the Villa last May, 2015 for almost three weeks and had a wonderful time. We were with family and friends. The villa is in a wonderful location and we did many day trips. We walked every day along the vineyards and poppy fields. The markets were wonderful and we had many delicious home cooked meals at the villa. There were nine of us and there was so much room and such nice furnishings! In fact we enjoyed it so much we are going back again in 2016 with more friends and family members!!

  • We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful property. It is excellently equipped with a large open plan kitchen on the first floor (so no ants/bugs) plus another fully functional outdoor kitchen beside the pool, great for outdoor drinks and snacks. All of the bathrooms have large wet-room-style showers and the master bedroom's en-suite is huge with a luxurious bath for de-stressing. The villa is situated in a sleepy hamlet and offers total privacy and quiet. The outdoor balcony, complete with full size dining table and umbrella, is perfect for overlooking the pool and grounds whilst eating al fresco. Lourmarin (best Friday market) is only 20 mins away and Aix 45 mins so the villa's location is superb if you want to explore Provence. JR and Camille are charming and responsive and keep the villa in excellent order. We recommend this property highly for a relaxing visit to this delightful part of the world.

  • We found La Belle Hélène true to its word as a luxury villa in a 'get away from it all' secluded setting. The perfect location for the family who want to leave the city behind for a while. The décor, facilities and large pool suited us perfectly and together with the large gardens, the children were never bored. The detached poolside kitchen and BBQ together with unlimited sunshine were an added bonus.

  • We've had the most wonderful time, and none of us want to go home!

This place is a little slice of paradise.

    Many thanks!

  • We spent the summer at La Belle Helene and had a magical time. The house is in a spectacular location at the foot of the Luberon, which is peace and tranquility personified. Everything about the property was perfect for us - a great BBQ for summer evening family dinners, incredible vineyards on the doorstep, a huge swimming pool for the kids, and great villages nearby for markets and restaurants. We would go back in a flash - the house was very comfortable with every kind of amenity that a family / group could need! So good that we would like to keep it as a secret for ourselves!
