Puisserguier, the village: Puisserguier has a history that dates back to medieval times, and belongs to a type of village called “the Circulades”. This style of architecture comes from the Romanesque period where the streets were built in concentric circles around the base of the chateau, which itself dates from the 11th Century, and brings back memories of Simon de Montfort and the Cathar Wars of 1209. Parts of the original walls of Puisserguier can be found around the village, and in the Rue Parmentier and the Impasse Lapeyronie you will find the remains of old water wells. These originally led to underground passages that connected with the castle at Maureilhan and the 17th Century Priory of St Christophe, which lies in the pinewoods just outside the village in the direction of Cazedarnes. It was thought by the villagers of the time that St Christophe protected them and their valuable vineyards which are still so important to the economy of Puisserguier. It is also said that Saint Clementine came to Puisserguier.

Attractions: winery tours - restaurants

Other Activities: wine tasting, canoeing

Golf: There are two very different golf courses in the area. The first, St Thomas at Bessan, is a 20 minute drive away on the East side of Beziers. An 18 hole course in a mature setting that demands all the protocols of a top rate British course. Popular with organised golfing holiday companies, an advance booking may be necessary in peak season. This course is probably more suitable for the experienced golfer with a good handicap. The second is a 9 hole municipal course set in breathtaking surroundings at Lamalou les Bains, a 40 minute drive North of Puisserguier. The course itself is mature and a pleasure to be on in its own right but is also technically demanding. Run in a very relaxed manner it would be suitable for players of all standards. Both courses have a restaurant and bar.
