L'Oppidum du Levant is a converted winery surrounded by beautiful vineyards and countryside. The property got its name from the ancient Roman oppidum it is built on. This home has a private heated swimming pool, a large garden, all amenities and is the perfect place for a family holiday or a relaxing time amongst friends. About L'Oppidum du Levant

L'Oppidum Du Levant is a wonderful converted winery, complete with a large garden and swimming pool. This old house is located in a tiny hamlet which currently numbers 30 people and has hardly changed in the last 2000 years - some of the neighbours still have the original Roman pillars in their houses!

This house itself has been carefully and sympathetically restored by the current owner. Great attention to detail is the hallmark - beautiful antique linens, Carrara marble tiles (unpolished) on the floors, antique furniture.

This lovely old house offers comfortable and spacious accommodation for up to seven people, in three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The private swimming pool (10m x 5m x 2m) is heated and has Roman steps. There are pretty terraces surrounding the house and garden which stretches for about a hectare.

WiFi internet access and 7 bicycles available for use. You can cycle through the vineyards to the nearest boulangerie and small supermarket. There is nothing that this property doesn't have!

Approaching the house from the drive at one end of the garden (where there is space for three cars), you get a wonderful view of the property. As you walk up to the house, you'll notice the free-form 10 metre long swimming pool (which is also heated and fenced if necessary), and the ancient olive tree beside it. The house is surrounded by terraces, so you can make the most out of outdoor living.

The front door leads into the living room, which is furnished with comfortable and easy chairs, a coffee table, a television, DVD player and CD/radio/cassette player. The dining area is furnished with a large dining table and chairs, and a traditional buffet.

The kitchen is furbished in a rustic style and is fully equipped with gas cooker, electric oven, microwave oven, dishwasher and fridge/freezer, electric coffee maker, electric kettle, blender and toaster.
From the kitchen, a door leads to the terrace at the front of the house, which is shaded by a grapevine-covered pergola, and furnished with comfortable chairs for lounging and relaxing, as well as a dining table, chairs and a sun umbrella for when the sun gets a bit too much. It's the perfect place for relaxing with a glass of wine and a book.
On the ground floor is the first of the three bedrooms; it is furnished with two single beds (90 x 200 cm), which can be placed together to make a large double. It shares a mezzanine above which is furnished with a further single bed, perfect for children.
En suite bathroom with walk-in shower, marble wash hand basin, WC and washing machine. A door leads from this bathroom to the terrace and pool area. This is brand new.

Stairs lead from the kitchen to the first floor where two more bedrooms are located. The master bedroom is a vast room with Juliette balcony which overlooks the side of the house. It has its own fireplace and sitting area so in the winter it would be exceptionally cosy up here. For the summer, there is a cool marble floor and the French door allows the sunlight to stream in. The king size bed can be split into two single beds.

The second bedroom overlooks the front of the house. As in the master bedroom, the king size bed can be split into two single beds.
Both bedrooms have access to the interconnecting bathroom on this floor, which is equipped with a shower cabin, WC and wash hand basin. The doors can be locked from the inside so complete privacy is assured.

The area between the house and the swimming pool has been painstakingly hand-paved in a traditional manner with river stones. Two large tables are set up, one on the terrace by the side of the house, which is pleasantly shaded, and another near the swimming pool. Sun loungers are available around the pool, allowing you to make the most of this tranquil and idyllic setting. A heat-pump allows the pool to be heated, and a pool fence is available for holidays with young children.

L'Oppidum du Levant is located between the villages of Saint-Jean-de-Minervois and Agel, and in easy striking distance from Saint-Chinian and Bize-Minervois. Away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the village is surrounded by vineyards and stunning countryside.

The name of the house comes from the fact that it is built on the site of a Roman oppidum. From parts of the garden, there are wonderful views over the countryside. There are many interesting walks and hikes in the immediate vicinity. Bicycles are also available for your pleasure. Another great way to discover this peaceful corner of the Languedoc is by horse riding in the forest, which you can do for an hour, half a day or more, just 5 km from the villa!

Fees and conditions

  • Security Deposit: €500.00
  • The rental rates include all utilities, except during the winter period, when electricity/heating will be charged according to consumption.
  • Linens, bedding, bath and pool towels are included in the rental.
  • A one-off charge of €70 towards laundry and final clean is included in the rental price of the first week.
  • Pool heating for May, June and September available on request before arrival. €50 per week.
  • Refundable security deposit of €500.00 payable in cash on arrival.
  • Tourist tax (Taxe de Sejour) charged at current rate.

Further Information

The owner lives next door and is able to cater lunches or dinners for you, which are fantastic! He is exceptionally discreet. He has his own entrance and parking area so the only time you might see him is early mornings when he manages the pool area.

The pool and drinking water come directly from a spring (tested and analysed for quality) so you are essentially swimming in mineral water!

No smoking inside the house, please.

  • L'Oppidum du Levant is a beautiful home set in a remote, quiet area in the south of France, yet close enough to small and large towns, as well as the sea. The home itself is stunning and is more beautiful in person than in the pictures. The owner, Philippe, has created a beautiful holiday home that caters to your every need. His attention to detail is remarkable, he has truly thought of everything to ensure the most pleasant stay possible. Philippe resides next door, but the use of the pool and outdoor eating areas was for our exclusive use. Both the interior and exterior of the home were gorgeous, filled with lovely antique and modern furniture. The pool was heated and perfect for our children as it had both a shallow and deep end. And there were three outdoor eating areas to choose from, one with a vine of grapes growing above. It was an absolute pleasure staying here, as well as meeting Philippe. We very much hope to come back again some day.
