About Mas Peyrepertuse

The ambition of the owners is to offer a quality stay in a superb private property of 5 ha surrounded by 300 ha of vineyards. The whole has been completely renovated in 2000 using quality materials. A stay at “Domaine de Pontserme”, is the ideal solution to recharge the batteries, to discover the rich history of this complete area and to enjoy the nice and peaceful environment as well as the excellent gastronomy offered in the region.

The Mas de Peyrepertuse is situated on the territory of Coursan, a typical South-French town with 6.000 residents only 10 kms from Narbonne, Narbo Martius, first roman trace in France. The Narbonne area, situated right in the middle of the Languedoc-Roussillon, is a territory with several thousand years of tradition for olives, honey, oysters, salt winning and of course wine growing. It is an infinity of landscapes from the old streets of “le vieux Narbonne” to the rocs of the Corbières as well as from the large Mediterranean beaches to the terraces of the Minervois. In between these two extremes, in between the hills covered with “garrigues” and the sea, lays a preserved world of lagoons : “les étangs et les salins”.

Leaving the village of Coursan by small country roads surrounded by vineyards, you arrive at the “ Domaine de Pontserme “, build in 1870. One of these small roads is the ancient “Via Domitia” the first road ever build by the romans outside Italy. By building this road Cneus Domitius Ahenobarbus, Consul, realised in 118 BC the link between the Pyrénées (le Col du Perthus) and the Alps (Summae Alpes or le Mont Genèvre close to Brigantio or Briançon ) passing by Narbonne and Béziers. Following several historical sources, the name Pontserme is derived from the latin “Pons Septimus” (Pons standing for bridge ; septimus standing for seven because the bridge was build at the seventh millia – thousand roman passes - from Narbonne). This bridge has been built to cross over the pond of Capestang.
